It was back in 1497, that the first contact between a European explorer and the indigenous Khoikhoi took place on these shores, when the great explorer Vasco Da Gama landed on the shores, of what he was to become St Helena Bay. In this day and age St Helena Bay is one of the worlds principal fishing centres and can be found on the Cape West Coast, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
During the spring season, St Helena Bay is exceptionally busy, as tourist, from all over the world, flock to the area to come view the wild flowers in bloom and enjoy the relaxation and recreation that is on offer. Between the months of August and November, the southern Right Whales can be seen in the bay, coming here to calve. There are numerous spots around the bay from which they can be viewed.
