Call it the Cape Helderberg, the Helderberg Basin or Hottentots-Holland, as it is formerly known, this area of the Cape remains one of the most visually dramatic and beautiful in the Western Cape. With the Hottentots-Holland and Helderberg Mountain ranges as backdrop, the region incorporates such towns as Gordons Bay, Strand and Somerset West as well as a few other.
Because of its close proximity to Stellenbosch, the Helderberg is home to the Helderberg wine route which is a subsidiary of the Stellenbosch Wine route. Just a mere 45 minutes drive from Cape Town itself, the Helderberg area has become a playground and weekend getaway for many visitors and local. With activities that include traditional and wind-surfing in the waters of False Bay to just relaxing with the family, swimming and strolling on the beach, or soaking up the sun and having a braai with friends.
Take a drive up, the famous, Sir Lowry's Pass to the Steenbras Dam and the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, or head over to Macassar where the beaches, unprotected from the cape winds, are best suited for kite and wind surfers. Head over to the Somerset mall for a day of retail therapy, or take a trip to Gordon's Bay to view some of the best sunset in the world. Try your hand at the many adrenaline fueled sports available such as , abseiling, hand gliding and paragliding in the magnificent mountains. Nature lovers will be thrilled with the various hiking routes some of which last for up to 5 days.
