The Cape Flats area of Cape Town, get is names from the fast flat open land on which the area lies. It is a primarily residential area, but it can very easily be considered one of the most historically rich areas of Cape Town. For it is to the Cape Flats that the former Apartheid Government forcefully relocated the families that now occupy the area.
Making a home for themselves here, the Cape Flats residents soon made the area home to some of the most vibrant communities in the greater Cape Town area. Despite its rather sour start, the Cape Flats holds a natural beauty that is very unique to the area, as there are close on 76 species of plants that exist only in the Cape Flats and nowhere else in the world.

Take a trip through Athlone, home to the Kaapse Klopse "Cape Minstrels", who show off their beautiful multi-colored costumes in their traditional, tweede nuwe jaar "second new year" celebrations every year on the 2nd of January.
